About the event
Two acknowledged silent classics from the era of the birth of cinema. These two iconic masterpieces combine the Gothic horror of Shelley and Stoker with the unsettling cadences of Expressionist artists and writers such as Kandinsky, Munch, Strindberg and Wedekind. Robert Weine’s ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ from 1920 sees the sinister Caligari use the unfortunate somnambulist Cesare to enact his evil bidding. In F.W.Murnau’s 1922 ‘Nosferatu’ (loosely based on Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’) Count Orlok is played by the incomparable Max Shreck, creating one of the most disturbing performances in cinema history. Both prints are presented with new, sympathetic 5:1 Surround Sound scores.
